How It Works

  • Do heated stair systems work on existing steps, or only new construction?

    Both are possible. Retrofit installs embed cables in a thin resurfacing layer over existing concrete, stone, or pavers. New construction allows cables to be set before the surface is poured, giving more control over depth and spacing. The right method depends on the current stair surface and tread layout.

  • Will the system keep the full step ice-free, including the edges?

    Full-tread coverage is the goal, but it requires cables spaced edge to edge across each tread. Systems with partial coverage leave cold strips at the stair nose and sides, which is where ice forms first on shaded entries. Correct spacing and a complete layout are what make the difference.

  • What happens if I delay installing a stair heating system and keep shoveling?

    Repeated freeze-thaw cycles at Golden’s elevation gradually work moisture into concrete and stone, widening surface cracks over time. Salt and de-icer accelerate that damage. A season of manual clearing also means the entry remains a slip hazard every time a storm hits overnight or before you can get outside.

  • How does the sensor control work, and will it run up my electric bill?

    A thermostat controller reads both surface temperature and moisture. The cables only activate when both conditions are present simultaneously. That prevents the system from running during dry cold weather, which keeps operating costs lower than a timer-based setup that runs on a fixed schedule regardless of conditions.

  • Can a heated mat replace embedded cables on my stairs?

    Pre-spaced heating mats work on some stair configurations and are easier to install without resurfacing. The trade-off is that mats sit above the tread surface, which can affect footing and aesthetics. Embedded cables are flush with the surface and more durable for high-traffic entries, but they require a resurfacing or new-pour step.

  • What surfaces are compatible with stair tread heating cables?

    Concrete, natural stone, and paver treads are all compatible. The cable layout and embed method are chosen to match the specific material so thermal expansion does not crack or lift the surface. A surface fit check is part of the evaluation before any installation is scoped.
